- X PRISE IN DEPTH SUGGESTION:
© Stormynites Working Title: Urban Energy Entrepreneurship X PRIZE
Executive Summary:
The civilized world is no less in need of a energy source to meet the
needs of the urban jungle most of us call home, than any undeveloped
area of the globe. Thus the concept is the development of a power
generator unit for urban home use, that reduces our carbon foot print,
(basically by reducung or eliminating our existing centralized utility
reliance), while still meeting each urban individual energy demands.
The ultimate goal here is individual energy independence while producing
excess energy back into the grid for commercial use. The prize would
guarantee the successful winning team patent rights with the
understanding that participating utility companies would provide a one
time 5% stipend (based upon the retail cost of the unit including
installation) to the designers, for each urban participant allowing them
to generate power from their residence with the device. The utility
could provide these units as lease or outright sale units with utility
easements on individual property. Imagine not having your lights go out, ever!
Grand Challenge:
Design and build a working individual unit or an energy system that
basically can function independent of the centralized utility as a self
sustaining energy generator meeting the needs for a urban home. It
must be able to be built and produced for no more than the average
price of a automobile for that area as a cost to the consumer.
Additionally, it has to be able to generate excess energy compatably
back into the utility grid. The problem is to eliminate our energy
reliance upon centralized utility generation facilities, ie no more
brown outs or black outs, less of a carbon foot print and a major
reduction of fossil fuel energy consumption.
Goals & Objectives:
The goal is individual home energy independence while producing excess
energy back into the grid for commercial use.. Through the design and
building of a working individual unit or an energy system that basically
functions independent of the centralized utility, it becomes the basis
of a grid of self sustaining energy generators that meets the needs for
urban homes. Once one home is able to attain that efficiency,
communities can too, achieving energy independence.
Public Benefit:
Once one individual urban home reaches energy independence, not only
does mankind not have to rely upon non-sustainable energy resources or
go down the self destructive path of nuclear energy, once this is
achieved, we also can utilize the excess energy generated to reduce
mankind's carbon foot print. It will take a change in corporate mindset
to help mankind be more compatable with our environment instead of
taking economic advantage of each other, for true change to take place.
Utility of the Prize:
The utility of the prize appeals to basic human needs for the winners of
the award. The award of the patent certainly one of the incentives, the
financial reward and the obvious recognition of the winning of this
award add to the satisfaction of helping mankind solve a real problem, a
win win for all.
Competition Rules:
The rules for the development costs should not be limited,
however the success of the winning entry should be based upon powering
an urban home through retrofitting the home with the generation entry by
a specific deadline date:
1)Achieving a urban home energy independence with a energy generation
device or system
2)It also must have the ability to produce excess energy that would be
compatibly generated back into the grid.
3)The production device must be able to be built for under the cost of
an average priced automobile.
Telegenic/Public Interest:
The installation/retrofitting of a series of homes in almost any
community with the support of a builder by the entrants will be a key
component of the competition. Contestants should all be willing to
reveal if their entry is ready, no later than a specific deadline date.
At that time, all contestants will begin retrofitting the homes, with
another time restriction for completion. Judging of the winning
criteria will be completed by the assigned XPRIZE judges, quite
literally when the generators at each house is powered up.
Adoption & Scalability:
Once the public, on a televised event like this, sees the capability of
retrofittable energy generation devices, the phones will be ringing off
the hooks and production better be ready to gear up to sell these. It
would be wise to line up utilities throughout the country that would be
receptive to certified electrician installations as well. Pre-approval
by utilities will be an important aspect of sales and acceptance.
Team Composition & Estimate:
Considering the importance of the widespread acceptance of this energy
generation innovation, it is my personal belief that there should not be
a limitation as to who can enter. Ideas if they are good and executed
well will win out, no matter whether they started in a garage in Kansas,
USA or a corporate laboratory in Berlin, Germany. I would expect that
the real challenge will be to have enough cameras throughout the globe
when it comes time to turn on the generators. I should think that there
will be initially at least a couple hundred contestants.
Registration Requirements:
Registration requirements will be to submit the initial written
explanation and drawn design within one year of registration. The
contest will span a period of four years, ending on last day of the
Mayan calendar in 2012, that should allow ample time for design and
development. Once that initial design has been completed and received,
a correspondence confirming their registration will be sent to them.
This should provide a true assessment of the number of participants.
Reporting & Judging:
Each contestant team to send a semi annual progress report of their
design and production efforts to remain an active participant in the
contest. Three months prior to the televised final demonstation, each
contestant will make arrangements with a local builder, realtor or home
owner to retrofit a home in their area. They will confirm the address
of the home they will be retrofitting with the XPRIZE judges and send an
extensive pictorial video of the home before any retrofitting has
commenced. Weekly video documentation, financial receipts and parts
lists must be submitted once retrofit begins. The team who successfully
meets all the criteria and finishes the retrofit in the least amount of
time is declared the winner.
Purse Size & Distribution:
Certainly I would encourage a total purse size of at least $500k for the
winner once you get donors. I also would suggest that second through
fifth finishers also get progressively smaller purses to make it all
worth while, as they probably are out some real bucks.
Funding Strategy:
Funding of the purse and operational expenses would more than likely
come from the housing industry itself along with builders. They always
are interested in adding innovations to their homes so that they have a
perceived edge on the competition. I have not explored assurances of
funding, yet as I have agreed that I have assigned you this idea
already, I would expect you could do some of that leg work.
Timeframe:
The time frame is approximately four years, ending the last day of the
Mayan calendar in December 2012, marking a new beginning for home
energy.
Additional Elements:
Getting the Congress to continue to provide tax breaks for alternative
energy solutions through this period would help consumers keep energy on
their minds and receptive to exercising energy saving solutions when
they are able.
Open Questions:
How would you provide a competitive environment for TV considering
contestants are not at a centralized row of houses where the
retrofitting could take place? Where could we get the homes for the
competition? Would we have to provide housing for the contestants?

DATE SUBMITTED: May 14,2009
Business Concept:
USEMAILS the proposed product would provide a dedicated secure email
service unlike the present email services in that each email account
registered with you would be tied directly to a physical geographical
address that you are in a unique position to verify. This would require
development of a completely separate email service for a fee [recommended
fee per email transaction using your service or on a monthly basis](thus
the capability to provide a secure email system). Not only would you be
able to verify email delivery of email messages based upon the physical
address the occupants of that physical location, you would also allow
tracking of people by name when they move to another address. This would
allow forwarding of email to those individuals. The commercial potential
would be extremely lucrative as well, as residential registrants could
opt to receive solicitation email from registered commercial accounts
through a reduced fee or as a FREE account. The concept would require
registration of all occupants at that physical location and either a per
email transaction fee or a monthly fee for secure email that the internet
public is more than ready for with respect to eliminating spam. You would
be able to provide a basic email service to each physical location by
their address initially as a secure account that would prevent spam. In
fact you would be able to better notify registered accounts of receipt of
physical mail that you have for them. Registered accounts initially would
only be able to send text but they could upgrade their account to add
additional services, like scanned documents or pictures or videos. The
fees could be based upon the usage of a base amount of band width or
length of email, your option.
COncept Category:
Web, Online Initiatives, Electronic Ecommerce
Opportunity:
The USEMAILS product eliminates spam with a secure independent email system.
It further expands upon the USPS' unique services and knowledge base. The
USEMAILS concept really takes the USPS into being green and potentially
significantly reduces paper use and overall savings to consumers and the
environment.
Value Statement:
Basically without implimentation the USPS will continue to lose consumer
business and go further into the red than is presently projected.
Value Statement Follow-Up:
The USEMAILS product will certainly improve the security of letters sent
through this proprietary email system and the efficiency of delivery to
the correct address, reduce waste and turn around the present ongoing
loss of revenue to competitors.
Business Arrangement:
My role in this proposed new product, USEMAILS, is that I am the idea
person of the concept and only that. As the founder of the Hedtke
Institute an online think tank is in idea generation. The only recognition
or compensation I seek is that of recognition of the idea for my online
think tank.
Value Proposition:
The USEMAILS product eliminates spam with a secure independent email system.
It further expands upon the USPS' unique services and knowledge base. The
USEMAILS concept really takes the USPS into being green and potentially
significantly reduces paper use and overall savings to consumers and the
environment.
Market Analysis:
Let me direct you to your own analysis of the market. As you can see your
share of the residential and commercial business involving letters has
steadily fallen with email companies as well as competition from FedX and UPS.
Customer Acquisition:
You already have a loyal customer base throughout the nation, with the public
relying upon your reasonable rates for their communication needs. The
introduction of a secure email system for the price of a email transaction
once built, the customers will stay with you because of your reputation and
history.
Competition:
The existing letter carriers, ie FedX and UPS as well as email companies.
Competitors' Strengths & Weaknesses:
Competitors responded to the letter delivery opportunity quickly once it
became available. The competition of email companies is well known however
the unsecured environment for FREE email is their downfall.
Potential Threats:
Failing to act on the opportunity.
Components:
A secure email system using multiple identifiers through registration only.
Revenue:
Sending secure email on a per transaction basis at a cost similiar to the
present charge for first class letter mail would definitely generate a
sizable additional revenue from the first time customers. The key is the
product must be a secure proprietary system. The system success has the
potential to rival GMAIL's with proper implementation.
Savings:
The costs that would be eliminated by the virtual elimination of first class
letters for the most part. The paper expense, the letter carriers, the
sorters, the equipment in support of that, the obvious reduction of staff
and therefor the reduced cost for benefits for staff including retirement
and medical.
Expenses:
The addition of the cost of development of a secure proprietary email system,
the associated hardware and software and maintainance of such a system.
Although this should not be taken lightly, the meteoric rise of google and
gmail is a perfect example of just how quickly you can make this happen.
Assumptions:
The key financial assumption is that you have both the staff, the equipment
and financial means to invest to insure your organizations very future.
Investment:
My own investment to date is the time to envision the concept and develop a
workable solution to your economic delimma. Once against it is because of
my own online think tank and ability to envision practical solutions that
helps my fellow mankind that is my motive.
Metrics:
Basically, the survival of your organization would be the best indicator
under the circumstances.
Intellectual Property:
none that I personally am aware
Other Partners:
none, I am the sole entity and founder of the Hedtke Institute
